Farmers to hold tractor rally, mahapanchayat on Republic Day

Tractor Rally on republic day

On the Republic Day, farmers belonging to various peasant groups have planned to hold foot marches and tractor rallies in 20 states to mark the Republic Day and pay homage to those who died during the massive protests against three farm laws, according to news agency PTI.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Wednesday said a grand assembly (mahapanchayat) would also be convened in Haryana’s Jind. The latest announcement has evoked concerns among the authorities in the wake of violence erupted during the tractors rally in Delhi, demanding rollback of farm laws.

Under pressure from the peasant groups, the Narendra Modi government withdrew the laws, leading to end of the months-long stirs.

On Wednesday, a statement was issued by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha announcing its plan to hold tractor rally. It said: “On the call of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, farmers all over the county will mobilise again on January 26 to observe Republic Day and hold tractor rallies, foot marches and conventions after hoisting the national flag.”

The foot march and tractor rallies will cover 300 districts in 20 states. Homage will be paid to all “kisan martyrs who lost their lives in the historic struggle of farmers against the anti-farmer government”. Memorandum will be given to district collectors, the SKM said, according to PTI.

A kisan mahapanchayat will be held in Jind in Haryana and the SKM will expose the conspiracy of the BJP government to break its unity, it said.
