Citing an example of Bulgaria, Dhaka officials claimed that the European country had already shifted its visa centre for Bangladeshis to Indonesia and Vietnam.
Dhaka: In a significant diplomatic escalation amid the ongoing India-Bangladesh diplomatic standoff, Prof Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim government head has requested the countries of Europe to shift their visa centres for Bangladeshi nationals from New Delhi. To provide background, visa centres of many European countries for Bangladesh nationals are located in New Delhi as of now, and the interim government head has requested the countries to move their centres to Dhaka or other neighbouring country.
“Relocating visa offices to Dhaka or a nearby country would benefit both Bangladesh and the European Union,” Muhammad Yunus told the diplomats.
“India’s restrictions on visas for Bangladeshis have created uncertainties for many students who cannot travel to Delhi for European visas,” Yunus added.
In a meeting with representatives hailing from diverse European countries convened at his Tejgaon office in Dhaka, Yunus made the appeal. The congregation saw the participation of 19 plus diplomats, residing in both Dhaka and New Delhi.
Additionally, citing an example of Bulgaria, Dhaka officials claimed that the European country had already shifted its visa centre for Bangladeshis to Indonesia and Vietnam.
Security enhanced outside Bangladesh High Commission
Security was stepped up outside the Bangladesh High Commission here on Tuesday in view of a protest march against alleged targeting of minorities in the neighbouring country, with officials saying the agitation caused traffic disruptions and inconvenience to commuters.
A senior police officer said they made adequate security arrangements in the area in view of the protest.
“We have enhanced security arrangements outside the Bangladesh High Commission in view of the protest march. No one will be allowed to breach law and order,” a senior police officer said.
The Delhi Civil Society and many other organisations had called for the march to the Bangladesh High Commission to protest against the alleged atrocities on Hindus in the trouble-torn neighbouring country.
Police had put barricades on the Teen Murti Marg on both the carriageway outside the Chanakyapuri police station where hundreds of people from various organisations gathered. The traffic was regulated in the area with vehicles being redirected to alternative routes.
