Delhi is all set to welcome the New Year, and the city’s police force has implemented extensive measures to ensure safety and order during the celebrations. With large crowds expected, particularly at key locations like Connaught Place, India Gate, and Khan Market, the deployment of 20,000 security personnel aims to prevent traffic violations and curb any instances of hooliganism.
Enhanced Security at Borders and Hotspots
Delhi Police have heightened security at borders shared with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, anticipating an influx of revellers from these states. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla confirmed special arrangements at major gathering spots, including iconic venues like Connaught Place, Kartavya Path, and high-profile hotels such as The Taj Mahal Hotel, ITC Maurya, and Shangri-La.
Security operations are divided into two zones, with supervision by senior officials. Zone A, covering areas like Parliament Street and Connaught Place, is overseen by Additional DCP-I, while Zone B, including Chanakyapuri and Barakhamba Road, is managed by Additional DCP-II. The effort includes 23 inspectors, over 600 police personnel, home guards, and Central Armed Police Forces, including one women’s unit.
Traffic and Metro Adjustments
To manage crowds, buses headed to Connaught Place will be diverted from 7 PM, and Rajiv Chowk Metro Station’s exit gates will close at 9 PM. Breathalyser checks, barricades at 27 checkpoints, and Quick Reaction Teams have been deployed. Key shopping and entertainment hubs like Hauz Khas Village and Saket Mall will also see additional traffic management measures.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) DK Gupta outlined arrangements focusing on India Gate, Hauz Khas Market, and Connaught Place, where vehicle restrictions will be enforced post 8 PM. Stickers have been issued for vehicles allowed entry into Connaught Place, while certain areas are pedestrian-only zones for the evening.
Delhi Police’s Humorous Warning
In a lighthearted twist, Delhi Police took to X (formerly Twitter) with a cheeky message aimed at potential troublemakers: “For hooligans, we are holding a Cell Block Party.” The creative post, styled like a party invite, underscores the force’s zero-tolerance approach to disruption.
As Delhi prepares for a night of festivities, the robust measures ensure that residents can ring in the New Year safely and joyously.
