Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the strategic Z-Morh tunnel in the Sonamarg region of Ganderbal district, Jammu and Kashmir, on January 13, 2025. The tunnel, constructed at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore, is a vital link between Gagangir and Sonamarg and will facilitate year-round access to the popular tourist destination in central Kashmir. However, during his speech, PM Modi did not provide a specific timeline for the restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
With snow-covered mountains forming a scenic backdrop, PM Modi hailed the completion of the 6.5-kilometer-long tunnel as a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity in the Union Territory (UT). He praised the resilience of the workers who faced harsh weather and security threats, recalling the tragic militant attack on October 20, 2024, that claimed the lives of seven workers at the construction site. Despite these challenges, the project progressed without interruption, symbolizing the government’s commitment to the region’s development.
The Z-Morh tunnel, alongside the upcoming Zojila tunnel, is expected to transform the connectivity of Kargil and Leh, easing access during severe weather conditions and improving the quality of life for local residents. PM Modi emphasized the importance of these infrastructure projects, noting their potential to boost tourism and economic activity in the region.
Highlighting the engineering marvels in Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi referred to the Chenab bridge and the various connectivity projects under execution, including the Chenani-Nashri tunnel, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link, and the ropeways at significant religious sites. He expressed optimism that these developments would position J&K as one of the most connected regions in India, opening up even the most remote destinations to tourists.
PM Modi underscored the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat), asserting that the prosperity of the entire nation is contingent upon the progress of all its regions, including J&K, which he described as the “crown of the country.” He assured the people that any obstacles to their aspirations would be addressed, and he called for collective efforts to realize shared dreams.
Responding to J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s call for the restoration of Statehood, PM Modi remained vague about the timeline but reassured that promises would be fulfilled at the appropriate time. He lauded the people of Kashmir for embracing peace and democracy, noting the region’s transformation with events like international marathons, car racing, and winter games, which signify a new era of normalcy and growth.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his address, acknowledged the progress made in conducting free and fair Assembly elections and urged the PM to fulfill the promise of Statehood. He emphasized the sacrifices made by the people for the region’s democracy and development, reiterating their commitment to peace and progress despite challenges from those opposing such advancements.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also spoke at the event, highlighting the transformative impact of the Z-Morh tunnel and the extensive investment in road infrastructure across the region. They emphasized that these projects mark a shift from the narrative of terrorism to one of tourism and development, paving the way for a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir.
