New Delhi, February 1, 2025 – As the Delhi Assembly elections draw closer, the Congress Party finds itself struggling to regain its foothold in the national capital, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dominating the political narrative. Despite efforts to rejuvenate its campaign, the Congress continues to face challenges in connecting with voters, raising questions about its relevance in Delhi’s political landscape.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years until 2013, has been relegated to the sidelines in recent elections. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls, the party failed to win a single seat, while AAP secured a landslide victory with 62 out of 70 seats. This time, the party has attempted to revamp its strategy by focusing on local issues such as unemployment, rising inflation, and inadequate infrastructure. However, its campaign has been overshadowed by the high-decibel campaigns of AAP and BJP.

Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have addressed multiple rallies in the city, emphasizing the party’s commitment to social justice and economic reforms. The party has also tried to capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments against AAP, accusing the ruling party of failing to deliver on promises such as improving public schools and healthcare. However, these efforts have yet to translate into significant voter traction.

Meanwhile, AAP, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has centered its campaign on its achievements in education, healthcare, and subsidized utilities. The party has also sought to position itself as a viable alternative to the BJP at the national level. On the other hand, the BJP has focused its campaign on national security, Hindutva, and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aiming to consolidate its core voter base.

Political analysts suggest that the Congress’s inability to present a clear and compelling vision for Delhi has left it struggling to compete with the well-oiled machinery of AAP and BJP. “The Congress is caught between AAP’s grassroots appeal and BJP’s nationalist narrative. Unless it can carve out a distinct identity, it risks being further marginalized,” said Dr. Sanjay Kumar, a political analyst at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS).

As polling day approaches, the Congress Party faces a critical test of its ability to reinvent itself and remain relevant in Delhi’s fast-evolving political landscape. With AAP and BJP locked in a fierce battle for supremacy, the Congress’s performance in these elections could have far-reaching implications for its future in Indian politics.

Key Updates:

  • Congress highlights unemployment and inflation in its campaign but struggles to gain momentum.
  • AAP focuses on its governance record, while BJP emphasizes national security and Modi’s leadership.
  • Political analysts question Congress’s relevance as AAP and BJP dominate the electoral narrative.

Polling for the Delhi Assembly elections is scheduled for February 8, 2025, with results to be announced on February 11.
